Use Of Able To

In this lesson, we are going to learn the use of able to which sounds as similar as can. But where the can define the ability, capacity, power, possibility, and permission etc. on the other handable to’ refers to have the ability, opportunity, time, power, etc. to do something.

Use Of Able To

Able to defines ability, opportunity, time, power, etc. to do something at the temporary bases. Able to can be defined in different tenses (present, past, and future). Able to also shows the skills, intelligence, proficiency to do something.

We can understand it with some examples:

I am able to write this easily.

She is able to drive you at home.

He is able to run after that boy.

He is able to solve the sums.

He is able to handle the situation.

You are able to do it very well.

No one is able to blame him.

You are able to accept the opportunity.

we are able to purchase these bikes eat this.

1500 students are able to participate in this competition.

He is able to afford this apartment.

In the negative sense, we can use not able to or unable to these both are synonyms. It shows a lack of ability, power or skill and not having time, knowledge, skill etc. to do something; not able to do something.

Not Able To/ Unable To

Both express a negative sense. They both are interchangeable as well as not interchangeable as whenever we use adverb with unable in the sentences to modify it. But not sure, there is any formal validity in sentences. We can understand it with some examples:

  • They are not able to purchase this car.
  • They are unable to purchase this car.
  • I am not able to run more and more.
  • I am not able to run more and more.
  • She is not able to jump from this tree.
  • She is not able to jump from this tree.
  • We are not able to sort out this problem easily.

Let’s take some examples in the sentences when we cannot interchange unable with not able to.  Let’s understand it with some examples:

  • I am completely unable to tolerate her.
  • We are unable to lose the game now.
  • They unable to face the problem smartly.
  • She is unable to handle the situation very well.
  • He is unable to anywhere by bus.
